Remember back in kindergarten when the girls and boys were divided (mostly because of cooties)? Well that may not be true anymore (the same way cooties were never real anyway) but most of us Modern Filipinas still have a group of friends with only girls in it. They were either with us since grade school or high school and we know for sure that we cant live without them! Here are eight reasons it’s great to have gal pals—read through them, and then make sure you message your gal pals to tell them how much you appreciate having them in your life!
1. You can tell them anything.
Especially if you guys are already really, really, really close. You can be your total self when you’re with them! You can say the weirdest or most embarrassing things. Well, they might judge you sometimes, but they’ll accept you anyway. That’s what friendship is about, after all.
2. You do the funniest, most embarrassing things together—and it’s fine.
Take really wacky pictures together, go on sleepovers (complete with pillow fights) together, spend a whole night singing the cheesiest love songs on the karaoke machine. Aside from saying things you normally wouldn’t with other people around, you do things that would be funny or on the verge of embarrassing together. But who cares? Its just you guys anyway, and all that matters is you’re having fun.
3. They act as a boyfriend barometer.
Of course no one else should call the shots in your life except you. But gal pals can often tell whether a guy is good for you or not. And of course they wanna spare you the heartache and their ears from your crying.Your sadness makes them sad too. And whether you like it or not, their opinion does matter to you. Besides, more often than not, what they say has some basis, maybe they see something iffy that you miss because you’ve those honeymoon-period rose-tinted glasses on.
4. You always have a shoulder to cry on when you need one.
Life doesn’t always go smoothly for the Modern Filipina. And when times get rough, you know for sure you’ll have a shoulder to cry on in girl pals. Girl friends know how life’s problems can really do a number on your heart, and they will be there to help you stand up when you fall. Chances are, they’ve known the story of why you’re crying from the start, so they can be there to really comfort you and tell you that things will be all right.

Someone’s got to tell you the truth about some things. Like if what your doing is wrong or if that guy you’re dating is a total jerk. And since your girl pals are concerned for your welfare and love you, it will be hard for them to shut up and just let things be. Aside from your mom (and sometimes even over and above her), they are the only people you can be 99.9% sure will give you their honest opinion.
6. Being dateless never has to mean not bringing a plus-one.
Going to parties with gal pals are the best! You can go prepare for the party together, boy hunt as well, judge what other people wear and of course, get drunk together. Well, whoever gets drunk first will be helped by the other right? So you have nothing to worry, they got your back. In case of creepy guys you’ll also be assured of a cockblocker.
7. They provide you with instant shopping buddies!
Its so hard to find a good shopping buddy nowadays. But when you have gal pals, you need not look further! Since you’re both girls, one of the many things you most likely have in common is your love for shopping! You get to try out stuff together and be honest about whether it looks good or not. Better yet, they’ll encourage you to try new things, and you can even ask them to serve as your budget police! Even window shopping with your friends can be fun!
8. They’re the sisters you choose in life.
Especially if you’re an only child, you’ll find the sister or sisters you never had in gal pals. You know each other’s family, visit each other’s homes, and you also see their siblings as your own. You tell each other secrets, actually allot time to bond with each other, know each other’s likes and dislikes and almost think alike at times. It’s like you were destined to be in each other’s lives like sisters are!
Sometimes when we feel down we have to be reminded of how lucky we are to have the people who truly love and care about us and why they are the best. As Modern Filipinas, we need that solid group to support us in getting through life and we are sure to find these in gal pals.
