What to Expect in 2020, Year of the Metal Rat

As a country with noticeable Chinese influence, the Philippines is not new to Lunar New Year celebrations. Tikoy manufacturers are thriving, fruit vendors are bringing out the round fruits, and this year, people like me are bemoaning the fact that the holiday falls on a weekend.

But there’s no point in whining when the upcoming Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new cycle in the Chinese calendar. This January 25, it’s time to say goodbye to the Year of the Golden Pig and welcome the Year of the Metal Rat with open arms.

The Chinese zodiac calendar goes through a cycle of 12 animal signs: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The Rat is the first sign in the cycle, so you can treat this year as a time for new beginnings and better opportunities.

The Year of the Metal Rat will last from January 25, 2020 to February 11, 2021.

What makes this year extra special is that the next Year of the Metal Rat will be 60 years from now. The Chinese calendar cycles through five principal elements: earth, metal, water, wood, and fire. These elements influence the characteristics of the animal sign.

The Metal Rat has an active, intelligent, and kind personality. They socialize well and treat people gently. Hopefully, the people surrounding you reflect these traits throughout the year.
