Lash care is one of the newest beauty treatments that is gaining popularity during this pandemic. With masks covering the lower half of people’s faces, they’ve taken to improve their eye, lash, and brow makeup. This has resulted in new DIY treatments, such as the eyelash perm.

What is a Lash Perm?

The lash perm is a beauty treatment that leaves your lashes semi-permanently curled for a few weeks. It uses small cylindrical rods to create the effect, much like curlers for your hair. It also uses a chemical solution to keep the curl from falling.

The treatment works best for people with long lashes or wide, open eyes.

How Long Does a Lash Perm Last?

The duration of lash perm’s results depends on several factors, from the chemical solution and perming technique to the expertise of who did it. The lifespan of this procedure lasts anywhere from two weeks to a month.

How Much is a Lash Perm?

A professional lash perm can cost anywhere from ₱ 2,500 to ₱ 3,000. A DIY lash perm kit, on the other hand, often goes from ₱ 750 to ₱ 1,500.

Lash Perm vs. Lash Lift

The last lift procedure curls and lifts your lashes from the base with the same chemical formula as the lash perm. The difference lies with the tool used to make the curl. Instead of a cylindrical rod, the lash lift uses a speed bump-shaped device to curl the lash and make it look longer.

Are DIY Lash Perm Kits Safe?

The lash perm is not a new beauty treatment, having been around well before the pandemic. However, DIY lash perm kits have steadily gained popularity as more people are learning how to do beauty treatments at home.

The chemicals used in the perming solution, specifically propylene glycol and methylparaben, are cosmetic-safe. But getting them in your eye will result in a trip to the emergency room. With one wrong move, damaging your eyelashes will be the least of your worries with the lash perm procedure.

In an interview with Allure magazine, Dermatologist Mona Gohara advised people against perming their lashes at home. She said that the skin on the eyelids is thin and sensitive, making it prone to irritation and infection. She added that people might end up damaging their eyesight with the wrong DIY kit or technique.

Dermatologists and Medical Aestheticians agree that lash lifts, lash perms, and lash tints are best left to the professionals. The cost of this beauty procedure is nothing compared to keeping your eyesight.

Alternatives to DIY Lash Perming

If you’re looking to make your lashes look longer and fuller, consider these cosmetic alternatives. Aside from being safer, these don’t need special techniques.

  • L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Boosting Primer – Apply this on your lashes before your mascara to make their curl hold for longer.
  • Careline Skinny Mascara – Apply this on your lashes after the primer. The thin and tiny bristles of the brush make sure each hair is coated, creating a fuller effect.
  • Sephora Collection Luxe False Lash – Put this on your prepped lashes to give yourself more volume.

Modern Filipina is supportive of practices that make you feel better about yourself. However, we urge all readers to do their research to make sure they are safe and healthy.
