3 Recipes for All-Natural DIY Hair Treatments

Unruly, frizzy, and dry: three adjectives that describe my hair. Although the Internet says washing your hair every two to three days will do your locks good, I’m guilty of over-washing mine.

My shampoo bar smells extremely good (and is waste-free!) but sucks the life out of my hair after a quick wash. I’m left with a dull-looking mane that’s hard to manage, especially when it’s still too short to tie in a bun.

To bring back the life into my hair, I often do at-home hair treatments that I can make in my own kitchen. Salon treatments can get quite expensive, considering the amount I spend on other hair products on a monthly basis. Plus, many beauty salons usually use harsh chemicals that damage both your hair and the environment.

Here are three easy recipes for easy, hassle-free all-natural hair treatments that you can do at home:

Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask

This is my go-to recipe for when I have around an hour to spare on Saturday nights before I go to bed. I wrote about this and other sustainable household products you can make on your own. With this concoction, my hair gets the TLC it needs without hurting the environment.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of organic virgin coconut oil
  • ½ cup of honey
  • ½ cup of castor oil

Instructions:

Pour the first two ingredients into a glass bowl and gently mix with a spoon. Heat the solution in the microwave for around two to three minutes, then let it cool down. Apply the mask on your hair, focusing on the tips instead of the roots. After 20 minutes, rinse it off. If the solution sticks to your hair, use a bit of shampoo. The added castor oil serves as a lasting moisture layer that gives your hair a gorgeous shine.

Egg Hair Mask

Outside the kitchen, eggs are a commonly used ingredient for all-natural beauty treatments, such as brightening facials and pore-tightening masks. Lo and behold, they do wonders for your hair, too! An egg hair mask will soften the texture of your hair and restore its lost shine.

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup of coconut milk

Instructions:

Crack the egg into a bowl and beat it until the yolk has fully blended with the egg white. Add the coconut milk and olive oil. Squeeze the lemon over the mix and avoid dropping any seeds into it. Mix the solution well. After you take a shower, massage the mixture into your scalp and let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse when you’re done.

Avocado Moisturizing Hair Mask

This hair mask is perfect for those with extremely dry, sun-damaged hair. Avocado is a protein-rich ingredient that replenishes the keratin protein in your hair. But don’t do the mask too often. In the Philippines, avocados can be little expensive. You’d want to save that last fruit for an avocado toast, too.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of avocado
  • 2 tablespoons of egg yolk
  • ½ cup of raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. If you want it a little warm, heat it up for one minute in the microwave. Apply the mixture to clean, damp hair from roots to tip. Let the mask sit for 20 minutes then rinse your hair with warm water.
